Madrid has secured its position as Europe‘s premier destination for meetings and conferences, winning the World Travel Awards’ title of Europe’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination 2026 for the ninth consecutive year. The award, presented at the European gala in Kotor, Montenegro, placed the Spanish capital ahead of major rivals including Barcelona, Berlin, Frankfurt, London, Milan, and Paris, highlighting its strong presence in the European meetings market. The recognition follows Madrid’s recent victories at the World MICE Awards 2026, where it was named the world’s and Europe’s best incentive destination.

Award Recognition and Collaborative Efforts

Almudena Maíllo, Madrid’s Councillor for Tourism, highlighted the collective contribution of hotels, venues, agencies, and transport providers to the city’s event appeal. The Madrid Convention Bureau, operating under a public-private partnership model, coordinates the destination’s meetings strategy and works closely with local stakeholders to enhance the city’s event offerings. The bureau focuses on strengthening Madrid’s position in the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions market while emphasizing social impact and long-term legacy benefits for the city.

Economic Impact and Business Traveler Satisfaction

According to the city’s business tourism report, Madrid hosted over 51,000 business events in 2025, generating an economic impact exceeding 5.5 billion euros. The city accounted for 23 per cent of all MICE industry expenditure in Spain. Business travellers rate the destination highly, with 99 per cent of event participants indicating they would recommend Madrid for meetings, citing its excellent infrastructure and accessibility. Visitors praised Madrid’s gastronomy, leisure, culture, and shopping offerings, contributing to a service satisfaction score of 4.46 out of five.

The sustained success reflects Madrid’s strategic focus on the meetings industry. With nine consecutive European MICE awards, the city has established itself as a benchmark for business tourism. The economic data highlights the sector’s importance, strengthening Madrid’s position in Spain’s tourism industry. The upcoming global World Travel Awards in December will determine whether Madrid can extend its winning streak on the world stage, further solidifying its reputation as a premier destination for international events.

Global Ambitions Remain Intact

Madrid is among the finalists for the global World Travel Awards, where it seeks to retain the title of the world’s best meetings and conference destination for an eighth consecutive year. The city’s recent accolades in incentive tourism further bolster its international reputation, demonstrating its commitment to excellence in the meetings industry. Detailed information about Madrid’s meetings offerings is available through the Madrid Convention Bureau.
