Global tensions rise as US arms stocks thin

The past four weeks have seen a sharp rise in antisemitic attacks across Britain, with arson, vandalism, and attempted arson targeting synagogues, Jewish charities, and communal buildings. These incidents have raised concerns about changing tactics involving local offenders who may lack direct ties to organized groups.

Attacks spread across multiple cities

On March 23, four ambulances belonging to the volunteer group Hatzolah were set ablaze outside a synagogue in Golders Green. The fire caused explosions from gas canisters inside the vehicles. Two weeks later, two people in dark clothing and balaclavas threw a brick and bottles containing suspected petrol at another synagogue. The liquid did not ignite, and the suspects escaped.

In the days that followed, more incidents occurred. A bag of flammable liquid was lit in the doorway of a former Jewish charity building in Hendon. Bins were set alight outside a communal block in Barnet. A bottle containing accelerant was thrown through the window of Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow.

Most of the attacks were claimed by Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, or the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right. Saul Taylor, president of the United Synagogue, described the surge as an “epidemic of anti-Jewish hate.”

Police investigation and concerns

The pattern indicates a shift where violence is outsourced to individuals without strong ideological ties to the groups claiming responsibility. This makes detection more difficult and raises concerns about funding and coordination.

Britain has a long history of antisemitism, but the current wave seems different. Some incidents may be opportunistic, while others could be directed by external actors exploiting local tensions. The lack of a clear motive complicates prevention efforts.

Government and community responses

The government has not introduced new measures beyond existing counter-terrorism programs. Community leaders have demanded increased security at Jewish institutions and greater public awareness of the risks.

The attacks in Britain coincide with challenges in the U.S., where weapons stockpiles have dwindled after months of conflict. Internal Pentagon estimates show the U.S. has used 1,100 long-range stealth cruise missiles—nearly its entire remaining supply—and more than 1,000 Tomahawk missiles, far exceeding annual production.

Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz remain high. Iran has seized two commercial ships, while the U.S. maintains a naval blockade.
