Discover Airlines plans to introduce its first Airbus A350-900 in June 2027, with initial short-haul training flights before transitioning to long-haul routes. The airline has not yet confirmed whether Calgary or Orlando will host the aircraft’s first intercontinental service.
A second A350 is scheduled to join the fleet in December 2027, operating flights from Frankfurt to San José, Costa Rica, and continuing to Belize City.
A350 rollout and route plans
Discover Airlines’ A350 introduction is part of a broader strategy to update its long-haul fleet and passenger experience. The airline will initially receive four A350s from Lufthansa’s Munich operation, with two more expected in summer 2028. A further nine A350-900s are planned for subsequent years, gradually replacing the existing Airbus A330-300 aircraft.
The A350’s extended range opens up new possibilities for Discover, potentially enabling the airline to serve holiday markets in South America, southern Africa, and Southeast Asia. However, these destinations remain longer-term prospects rather than immediate route announcements.
Training and initial operations
Before embarking on long-haul flights, the inaugural A350 will undergo a training period on a frequent short-haul route. This approach allows Discover to familiarize crews with the new aircraft and establish routine operations. The specific training route has not been disclosed.
Once training is complete, the A350 is expected to transition to a well-established long-haul service from Frankfurt. Calgary and Orlando are the leading candidates, as both cities are already served by Discover with up to daily flights. This strategy enables the airline to introduce the new aircraft without the added complexity of launching a completely new route.
Central America expansion
Discover’s A350 plans include a significant expansion of its Central American network. From December 14, 2027, the airline will take over the Frankfurt–San José route from Lufthansa, increasing service to six weekly flights. Two of these flights will continue to Belize City, creating a triangular routing.
The addition of Belize City as a new destination provides travelers with more options for reaching Belize’s Caribbean coast, inland nature reserves, and Maya heritage sites. However, passengers should note that the routing through San José represents a change from Discover’s earlier announcement of a nonstop Frankfurt–Belize City service.
Fleet modernization and cabin upgrades
Discover’s A350 introduction coincides with a broader fleet modernization effort. The airline recently retired its final Airbus A330-200, leaving a more uniform long-haul fleet of 15 A330-300s. The A350s will gradually replace these aircraft, with Discover expecting its long-haul fleet to reach 20 aircraft by mid-2028.
As Discover Airlines prepares for the A350’s arrival, travelers can expect more details on routes and schedules to emerge in the coming months. The airline’s official website provides additional information on its fleet and future aircraft plans, although published departure times and aircraft assignments remain subject to change.
A350 Designation and Booking Details
Discover Airlines advises travelers to look for the A350 designation in the reservation system when booking flights to Costa Rica or Belize. The airline has not confirmed a start date for A350 service to these destinations.
The routing is an important detail for passengers. An earlier announcement described the Belize service as a nonstop connection from Frankfurt. However, the newer A350 plan specifies a routing through San José for two weekly flights. Discover says planned A350 services will be identified in booking systems over the coming months.
The airline recommends that travelers check the final itinerary, stops, and operating aircraft before booking. This ensures passengers are aware of the specific routing and aircraft type for their chosen flight.
